Satellite data acquisition

The satellite data are received through the High Resolution Picture Transmission (HRPT) receiving station in HKUST, which became operational on November 21, 1994. The receiving station has been receiving signals from five polar orbiting broadcasting satellites, NOAA-9, NOAA-12, NOAA-14, NOAA-15 and SeaStar with SeaWiFS.. The station's coverage is within a diameter of 2,300 km in the north-south direction (4 degree elevation) and 2,500 km in the east-west direction (12 degree elevation), as shown in the following map.

The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from NOAA satellites are used to calculate sea surface temperature using the MCSST algorithm and the distribution of suspended matters. The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data are used to calculate chlorophyll_a concentration and other ocean color related parameters by SeaDAS software. The data in Hong Kong coastal waters with the range from latitude 21 to 23.35 and longitude 113 to 115.4 are processed and ingested into our data system.
